Hi Bruce - I am embarking on my own first solid guitar build, here in NZ just for the love of it, having played for the last 34 years. I am an ex-chippy by trade, after my Father but I am not a luthier and I respect the difference. I wanted your professional opinion on the likely sound of the finished instrument.

For the last 18 months I have been reading up on guitar building, I have a very clear vision of what I want and have prepared a design specification, which I am developing into a method statement and will progress these into a full scale drawing and prototype. Yes I am very meticulous!

Okay, so it will be a thru the body curly maple neck, 25 1/2" scale, 24 fret and 12" radius ebony fingureboard (1.73" Graph Tech wide nut and volute with Paua round inlays and jumbo frets), DiMarzio F-spaced Super Distortion and Super 2 pickups, 5-way switch and flat top body wings of, (pause for fanfare of trumpets): English Walnut (Juglens regia)!

My Father rescued a couple of display cabinet ends from an exclusive mens outfitters back in the 50s and its been around ever since! Their around 3/4" thick, so I'll laminate 3 together and only rout out enough to comfortably accomodate the screened wiring and hardware to maximise sustain - rather than the usual caverns which the mass producers create.  I like the clean REM sound as well the natural distortion of Led Zep, Bad Company, etc.

The finish must be clear nitrocellulose of course and the bridge will be Schaller's 3-way adjustable D6 in gold with matching Schaller M6 locking machine heads.

I want to do it all myself except cutting the fret slot which I have chickened out of - I know my limitations, so it will come from StuMac!

So what do you reckon?  Any view of the sound and advice on the building?  In particular, I haven't actually thought yet how to shape the neck, other than by the usual joinery techniques and alot of TLC, to be sure of getting it straight down to a slim C profile.

I am new to this forum lark and intended every member to see it and comment - hope I've allocated it correctly and apologies if I haven't.

Now I am posting this, I guess I am going to have to actually start it.

Hi Mark, I'll have to re-read your post, but it sounds like you've put a lot of thought into it. It's amazing how well first guitars turn out for most folk who have previous wood-working skills. And it's even better if it runs in the family and folks have equipment you can use. I know you were wanting a big response and here I can help.

Consider copying this post and posting it over in the Main Forum. I'll be watching for it and respond over there. You might make it more open and direct it toward all the fine luthiers here. I know I hesitate to respond to threads where a specific person is named as requesting info from. This way, anyone can respond with years of experience to speak from, it's great.

Mark I see you are building an electric and this forum while mainly acoustic building, there are some great builders here who do electrics too. I'm mainly acoustic even though I'm building my first electric too, a Wal type Bass with bolt on neck and dual stacked Alnico Humbuckers 18 Volt Active system. Again, try copying and posting your query over in the Main Forum and open it to experienced electric builders, you'll be amazed at the response. Bruce

Just heard back from John Watkins, and he says that the OLF #2 Guitar Project neck completion is moving toward the front burner. That's fantastic. Congratulations on your move and new shop John!

Thanks to all who donated time and talents to this Gift Guitar Project. The recipient (who encountered major life-threatening illness, but is mostly recovered) is an industry guitar guy and this guitar will go to him when it's done. We kind of want it to be a surprise, so he's unnamed other than the initial talk on the OLF which was removed, so even a search won't do you any good. PM me if you really want to know and I'll tell you. His initials are....
